This one came in the way the best jobs usually do — through somebody else.
Back in May, Gornalls Garage in Hambleton — who we do regular work for — passed our number to a customer who had a classic Jaguar E-Type booked in for some maintenance. First time he had used us. First time he had spoken to us, in fact.
The collection was out between Hambleton and Garstang. The owner was not there — he had left the keys with his wife. So the first time anybody from WS Logistics laid eyes on that car, there was nobody present who had ever met us.
We took longer loading it than we normally would. Not because it was difficult; because it was immaculate. Genuinely one of the cleanest E-Types we have had on the trailer, and there was nobody stood there watching us do it. That is precisely the moment to slow down.
There is something about moving these older cars that never really wears off. The engineering is on show in a way it simply is not on anything modern, and an E-Type in that condition is a reminder of why people keep them on the road at all.
We delivered it to Gornalls that afternoon — there was already a Triumph up on the ramp when we pulled in, so the E-Type was in good company — and three days later we got the call to collect it and run it back, exactly as arranged.
That evening he called round to settle up in person, which was a nice way to finally meet the man whose car we had been trusted with twice without ever having shaken his hand.
He has used us for every run to the garage since.
